A.F. Vandevorst’s Spring/Summer 2014 (All images: Fairchild)
An Vandevorst and Filip Arickx met in 1987 on their first day of school at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp – in one of the most prestigious design schools in the whole world. The belgian brand’s current line is a complete women’s ready-to-wear line comprising of shoes, bags, accessories….oh and before I forget; they have just celebrated the 15-years-birthday of their label this season, so they dug into the archives to put together their SS14 collection. On first glance, I was really taken by the sand/rust effect that was applied on one side of each models’ outfit, and half of their hairdo-s were plastered in sand too – that gave cool continuous visual thread though out the collection. The pieces otherwise followed the inspiration of the girl on a trip with an adventurous attitude, hence resulting functional, clean and delicate garments reflecting the designers unique style. The collection as well paid homage to their signature designs that were redid for the season, such as impeccable tailored leather jackets, faux socks-and-sandal booties, flat studs on leather dresses, draped scarves shimmering with gold, mottled jacquards in shades of lively purple. HBD A.F. Vandevorst!

3.1 Phillip Lim’s Spring 2014 RTW (Images: Fairchild)
Yet another big and beloved name, 3.1 Phillip Lim shown his collection during New York Fashion Week that we couldn’t help not reflecting on. Lim’s Spring 2014 collection is based around the idea of elements and the ecosystem, showcasing earth-coloured statements, while even having the runway made of salt crystals. To the question of ELLE whether he has always been interested in science, he answered the following: ‘Yes, I have! I am an evolutionary designer and find myself always thinking it must all exist for a reason.’ The collection once again provided the ultimate in-s for the upcoming season regardless of any romantic summer flairs, it rather showcased raw landscapes, ‘a brute yet beautifully charged ecosystem’ reflected on luxurious fabrics. Not to forget about styling, the mirrored Linda Farrow x Phillip Lim sunglasses only strengthened the edginess and volume of the structured pieces as the models feet slightly sinked in the pure white salt crystals as they down the catwalk.

Taking the coolest boys and girls to a botanical garden is what the Spring/Summer 2014 Bruuns Bazaar collection properly recalled. Just like we expected – since artists and architects are the constant inspirational sources of the Danish brand, the season wasn’t an exception either; their inspiration drew upon a bunch of German architects that challenged traditional construction with living plants under the term ‘Baubotanic’. Due to the many pretty floral prints and delicate lines, the result was rather refreshing; subtly feminine and effortlessly cool predicting the season’s laid back must-haves. The show that took place at the green courtyard of the company’s headquarters already suggested the brand’s ‘close to the nature’ approach, displaying the shades of beige, navy purples and popping light tones for the sake of a fresh touch. We are currently dying for the flower embroidered sweatshirts and the pure white tomboy dress, not to mention the sunnies and matching loafers…

The much awaited Copenhagen Fashion Week is yet to come so it’s time to refresh some memories from last season. To start with a truly and eternally beloved one – by staying loyal to her signature style, Stine Goya invited us to a trip to the Moon with her latest Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. The designer – blessed with a great imagination – took the inspiration from the movie called ‘A trip to the Moon’, which was one of the first movies with special effects. Stine added colour splashes to the otherwise mostly pastel palette completed with some black and white pieces, which she topped with foil-print effects and golden details for the sake of recalling the textures of the moon. The inevitable golden elements and specifically mosaic prints are the key details season after season, which strongly belong to Stine’s world and way of adding hand-embroidered details. Her magic talent to create poetic and beautiful collections that are embracing designs with a story behind literally shined through again. Watch the new ‘A trip to the Moon’ short film a la Stine Goya!

The SilkSoFine team witnessed Todd Lynn‘s rather cool inspiration during London Fashion Week, which was drawn upon the theme of The Gopher Gang, a New York tribe who would jump people for their clothes then send them to a seamstress for alterations. Somerset House’s guests – besides the edgy, yet dynamic collection – got to enjoy some captivating tunes of The Libertines’ Gary Powell. Lynn – as usual – added an innovative and clever edge to the collection by taking a man’s jacket, where the proportions kept, but is feminised with gathering at the back. Raw edges, outer darts, densely pleats, fine laces and pony skins are the key features of his AW13 collection, titled ‘Ante Bellum’. We wish to be in the early 20th century New York right now and are excited to see what Lynn’s great fantasy comes up with in the upcoming season!
