The moment of weakness when you are face to face with the object of desire and the higher power seems to take over your sense. Any sense indeed and all you can do is to let it get you. I am regularly experiencing such occurrence when facing the immenseness that is created by Sabrina Dehoff. The Berlin-based jewelry designer has what it takes to be a design goddess and take over the ostensible main powers such as Tiffany & Co. . Yes I literally mean & Co. and I am asking myself, who will ever need this suspect light turquoise box when you can get Sabrina Dehoff’s designs? Well, contemplating the diamonds vs. gold-plated metal discussion I am out here. However it is fascinating me how exceedingly inventive and exceptionally visionary Sabrina creates her designs, forming a whole character around it and leaving the interpretation to the one wearing it. Swarovski Crystal has more than 100 years of history and is renowned for its quality and distinction, hence the fact, that Swarovski Collective selects a group of designers every show season to collaborate with, must be the greatest honour. The carefully selected talents who are chosen based on ‘cutting edge talent and ability to demonstrate exquisite craftsmanship with crystal’. To the existing list of designers consisting of Mary Katrantzou, Prabal Gurung, Giles and Rodarte the following ones will join: Alexis Mabille, Sister by Sibling and Michael van der Ham for the very first time. The initiative most of all aims to support both emerging and established designers in exploring craftsmanship and heritage. As it’s explained on Vogue, ‘As the members of the collective, each designer receives financial support towards the production of their show, as well as free reign to experiment with Swarovski crystals.’ It looks like we are looking ahead to a glamorous season, because nothing sparkles as bright as a crystal.

A few weeks ago I visited the lovely & Other Stories store opening in Copenhagen, which is the new high street label from the team that brought us Monki or COS, and it’s been three years in the making. & Other Stories is a brand under the H&M Group and is offering women a wide range of shoes, bags, accessories, beauty and ready-to-wear pieces, thus allowing them to create their personal style, or story. Their creative ateliers in Paris and Stockholm design diversified fashion collections with great attention to detail and quality at an affordable price. Their design norms stand for effortlessly diverse styles, ranging from masculine tailoring to feminine chic, and the pieces are designed to provide endless styling choices by ignoring fast fashion trends. They recently opened their doors inBerlin, and their view on expansion is rather rapid, so don’t worry, & Other Stories will come after you, wherever you are living.

We have met lovely Katie Rowland during Paris Fashion Week, the jewellery designer who draws inspiration from the eternal muse, the femme fatale, by placing the powerful, yet beautiful women in the centre of her designs. The inspiration speaks of mythology and history where the sophisticated women craves to rule, while being highly seductive, just as Morrigan, the Celtic goddess was. Katie is renowned for only using precious and visually breath-taking materials such as semi-precious stones, just like garnet, amethyst, black spinel and blue topaz. The collection speaks for itself, its sensual and contemporary with a touch of dark edge added.

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2012, Lily Kamper founded her London based jewellery label, creating pieces that reflect her love of unusual material combinations and designs that speak of modern luxury and high-scale of sophistication. Her AW13 collection embodies a wide range of different materials including printed leather, perspex, Corian, brass and 18 carat gold plating converted into geometrical shapes. Lily’s perfect sense to handling proportions allows her designs to be highly contemporary, yet to be attractive for women in every age-group. The touch of neon-vibes interpreted among the otherwise bold colour palette just makes the whole collection even more desirable. We are clearly facing a great talent, she is definitely one to watch!

Seems like jewellery designers literally dreamed big. Both the last and the upcoming season dictates that less is more, which creates the perfect time for a stand-out accessory. Such piece can perfectly complete a comfy jeans-sweater combination or give some glam to a simple dress worn with heels. It is easy to get lost within the bright crystals incorporated into contemporary silhouettes, since the new trend quickened the imagination of the upcoming designers just as the big fashion houses. Ward’s pieces suggest textural contrasts from a diverse list of materials, such as aluminium wire and gold beadings, yet keeping the overall picture clean, and above all highly contemporary. In contrast to Ward‘s materials, Erickson Beamon‘s tribal-inspired necklace combines Swarovski crystals, lapis lazuli and jade. Elvira Sazesh‘s hand-printed gold prints on suede, gold coloured leather and black suede are the textural expressions she used. Both Fiona Paxton and Susan Caplan took the always ‘in’ material: gold, while Valentino and Miu Miu strayed away from contemporary excess, and rather went with crystal bead embellishment and Swarovski stones. Have you purchased your statement piece yet?
(more…)
