Being obsessed with the Japanese beauty –  who’s also the current face of Stella McCartney’s fall campaign – Chiharu Okunugi, graces the pages of Vogue China’s August issue for a beauty feature. Besides the beauty editorial, a short film titled ‘Homage’ was made in which Okunugi plays the massive fitness lady role as doing sweaty training for an upcoming match, juxtaposed with rather classical musical selection. In another scene, Okunugi lies seductively on the bed, wearing a creamy silk nightgown, with a fan blowing her hair and ice cooling down her skin. In the photo shoot the model sparkled in elegant looks ranging from sporty to ultra-feminine styles while personifying the idea of true beauty.

(more…)

It’s rare to find a fashion story which you can fully identify yourself with; I’m not sure what happened – is it the location, the colours, the atmosphere or maybe the balanced mixture of these – but I fell in love with the visual series above. It’s summertime and the living is easy: bikinis, beaches, passports and smoking hot girls and boys. And what is the story trying to say? We cannot escape fashion, and we cannot do without architecture. We tailor to both. We all wear fashion and everyone needs architecture as a place to work or to live in. It’s like day and night, right or wrong, you and me…only perfect when it exists together; in harmony. Fashion photography in the 30’s discovered architecture and urbanity as a space that allows a freer and more dramatic fashion presentation. The fashion story above has a very individual approach to exaggerated proportions of colourful walls along the beach, tanned bodies almost getting lost in the humongous spaces, while still attracting attention to the tiny screenshots of the tanned body-parts. This visual story depicts fashion in unusual and spectacular spaces and yet blurs the borders between art, fashion and architectural photography. The bikinis showcased belong to the German designer Phillip Plein, whose swimwear pieces speak of new luxury, playful silhouettes and bright colour palette. We are ready to get lost in such places!

(more…)

No make-up is the new make-up. Well, it’s not entirely true, but one thing is sure: the season prefers healthy, laid-back make-up over the smokey eyes and perfectly masked faces. This summer’s Baywatch-sexy must-haves include bronze toners, brush for the messy eyebrows, waterproof mascara and colourful nails and lipsticks. To be able to avoid liquid make-up you will need to have your daily beauty sleep, lots of water, fresh fruits and veggies, and some D-vitamin from the sun. As for the hairstyle, it is no question that voluminous yet wearable looks should have the major presence; loose knots or messy wind-blown braids are not only comfortable but are also suggesting the perfect too-cool-to-care and the lets-rock-the-beach looks. All in all ladies, go nude! There’s no better time to let your natural beauty shine through than the lively summer months. With the aid of a little concealer, tinted moisturiser and glow on the cheekbones to achieve your desired finish, you’re ready to go. PS don’t forget the sunnies!

Kein Make-up ist das neue Make-up. Mädels, alles in allem benutzt Nude!

A few weeks ago I referred to my styling project, and I promised to share some insights about how did it all go. First of all you have to know, that the lovely team – which gathered to execute the photographer’s, Manuela Iodice’s visual concept – met for the very first time on the occasion of this project. Manuela is from Rome, Italy and we met online as she was seeking for a stylist in Copenhagen. I was really glad because she had the perfect possible location on mind: The Black Diamond, and the rest was kind of evident, so to say. We agreed on minimalistic pieces, laid-back silhouettes, some grunge blended natural feel the whole fashion story should suggest. The project was a collaboration between Manuela and model Anne Christine Kjer Hansen from SCOOP, who happened to be the perfect choice with all her modern beauty attributes: a bit of scandinavia (skin&hair), youthful freshness (in her eyes) and a touch of chic grunge-effect (in her postures). As a stylist, I had to select the pieces, combine them and make sure it looks the way it’s supposed to look on each photograph. See the rest of the images on FLUR Magazine.

(more…)

I have the feeling that if things keep going this way I soon have to excuse myself for my white-addiction, but when I saw the ‘Pale Days’ editorial it literally took my breath away. The icy white hues, metallic embellishments, and the way as model Caitlin Lomax poses for photographer Astrid Salomon makes a perfect combination, where the garments, styling and make-up are in true harmony. The brunette beauty poses against a rustic backdrop wearing looks from Australian designer Natasha Fagg’s latest collection, while playfully, and yet effortlessly let the different textures flow on her body. The whole feel of the fashion story suggests a fresh summer noon scene, where creatives got together to create something exclusive and intimate where photographic imagery speaks better than words.

Bitter Greens editorial was born from the collaboration of Nil Hoppenot and Lisa Jarvis and meant to showcase some very current couturiers. Both beauty and drama are presented in the story, in which Olivia Thorton model played the main role by emanating a sense of dark decorum. The editorial is also very appropriate as baroque elements made a comeback in terms of prints, textures and embellishment. The editorial mostly features the dutch designer, Jan Taminiau‘s garments which have a refined, conceptual undertone yet never lose sight of the elegant, feminine and wearable form. For him the past is about ‘love, love for craftsmanship and a deep respect for authenticity’ and the rest speaks for itself.

Exciting times are coming: tomorrow I will be working on the behalf of an italian photographer as a stylist, which I will tell you more about later on the blog. When it comes to styling, stylists usually – in conjunction with the photographer and mua (make-up artist) – start up with creating a moodboard kind of inspirational-plan based on the fashion story the team would like to create. If the photoshoot is not commissioned by any magazine or online platform, the artistic freedom and opportunity for improvisation given is most probably the highest possible. The beauty in it is that each member of the creative team gives something unique to the whole concept, by hopefully creating a dream-team sort of collaboration. I’m personally fascinated by seeing such masculine, or rather boyish high-school feel fashion story just like this one. I imagine this story as an everyday morning capture of an effortlessly stylish and naturally beautiful girl, who was the tallest in the class. Despite all the scandals about extremely skinny models, one thing is sure: they make a stir no matter what are they wearing; ripped denim, sparkling sequins or a well-positioned trash-bag on Fool’s Day.

(more…)

It’s no secret that editorials for me are maybe one of the most exciting way of expressing fashion and style. Fashion editorials always have some narration, theme or something that ties the flow of the fashion story in a series of photographs, and makes it a cohesive story. Fashion editorial is a bit of a platform where anything goes, the styling can be over the top and way out of the comfort zone, and still be able to show a balanced collective of garments, make-up, hair-do, accessories and set design as a result of creative teamwork. The showcased editorial makes me think of interpreting everything, that defines ‘pale’ and ‘fire’ in a minimalistic and calm sense, by mixing effortlessly stagy postures and pastel sets. To deal with The Ones 2 Watch‘s perception: ‘The whimsical prints and dreamy colours soften the blow of intensity that emanates from this slow burner.’

(more…)
